I broke my phone screen

A few weeks ago my phone quickly lost its ability to hold a charge. I removed the case and noticed that it was swelling up! So I did what any responsible person would do and I ordered a replacement battery from iFixIt. A couple days later my battery replacement kit arrived, and I decided to perform the operation at work. Well, apparently it's highly recommended to use a heat gun, or a heating pad, or even a hair drier, just something that will heat up the adhesive and make it easier to disassemble the phone.

I thought, naaaah. It's fine, I'm a professional. So long story short, I fucked up my screen - half of it is covered in vertical lines, a lot of the top area of the display doesn't register touch inputs. Luckily the whole keyboard works, so I can still use it to send messages and make phone calls and all that important stuff, but browsing Reddit and Facebook and the like is extremely inconvenient. I figured, alright next week I guess I'll order a screen replacement kit after I get paid, no big deal.

Payday came and due to other expenses I put off ordering the screen replacement for another week. Same story the next week, there were just more important uses for my money. And then I realized - I don't actually care. My phone does everything that I need it to do, and now I spend next to no time just idly staring at it and doomscrolling. I'm finding myself doing my Internet Stuff on my laptop, which inherently causes me to spend time doing more engaging things that don't actively rot my brain. I started reading blogs. I discovered the IndieWeb. I'm finding myself happier with the way I engage with the internet.

So here I am. My broken phone screen led me here, a proper blessing in disguise. I'm never going to replace that screen. Maybe I'll get a flip phone.

Anyway, thanks for reading. I'm not sure what I'll blog about here. Maybe it'll just be a journal of random thoughts, maybe I'll write about interesting projects I attempt to tackle, maybe I'll talk about old video games, who knows.

Oh, and just as a side-note, this blog will be 100% AI-free. Just a computer nerd and his often-disorganized thoughts.

Cannon out.
